09 Jan Pantone’s Color of the Year
Are you tired of hearing the word “unprecedented”? Every single one of the interior designer pros at Delray Beach’s TW Style certainly is! So, we won’t say that Pantone’s selection for their Color of the Year is you-know-what, we’ll just say that it is very unusual.
What is so odd about the selection that the Pantone Color Institute made for 2021? They didn’t pick a color – they picked two.
The Pantone Colors of the Year
There was more than a desire for unity behind the choice of the dynamic duo of PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and a vibrant yellow, PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating.
“A message of happiness supported by fortitude, the combination of PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating is aspirational and gives us hope. We need to feel that everything is going to get brighter – this is essential to the human spirit,” the color experts at Pantone said when announcing their choice.
“Each of them has their own emotional aspect, the gray being the one that’s more supportive and solid, the practical foundation that we need, and the yellow is about hopefulness and sunshine and good cheer.” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute told TIME magazine.
If you want to surround yourself with positive energy and vitality, you will love Illuminating, a warm and cheerful shade of yellow that really does make you want to smile. Grays, of course, have been on trend for a while, but pairing Ultimate Gray, a weathered and quietly assuring shade, with a sunny yellow makes it feel very fresh.
In all honesty, there is a precedent for this unusual decision. “Design fans may remember that back in 2016, the company picked both Serenity, a soft blue, and Rose Quartz, a blush pink,” the folks at Real Simple reported. “For the Pantone Color of the Year 2021 selection, the combination of two colors is meant to represent the need for unity.”
